The Project
The Sanctuary Project is a multi-year data collection effort aimed at documenting and preserving Ukrainian sacral culture on the Canadian Prairies. It ran from 2009 to 2018.
Project team
The participants in the project are John-Paul Himka, Professor of History and Classics, Natalie Kononenko, Kule Chair in Ukrainian Ethnography, Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, and Frances Swyripa, Professor of History and Classics. All were faculty at the University of Alberta. Also in the photograph is Eva Himka, project coordinator, sitting behind Natalie Kononenko.
Other faculty involved in part of the project were Keith Bell (University of Saskatchewan) on the left in the first picture below and Linda and Laszlo Ivanits (Pennsylvania State University) sitting behind Natalie Kononenko in the second picture.
