    Sanctuary: The Spiritual Documentation Project

The Sanctuary Spiritual Heritage Documentation Project aims to document Byzantine rite, primarily Ukrainian, sacral culture on the Canadian prairies. The Sanctuary team consists of faculty John-Paul Himka, Natalie Kononenko, and Frances Swyripa and project coordinator Eva Himka, plus students and community volunteers. The project documents churches in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Photographs are taken of church buildings and external structures such as bell towers. In addition, the project photographs all items within the documented churches and conducts interviews with parishioners. A small selection of the many wonderful people who have talked to the Sanctuary team are profiled here. In 2019 we added a Google Map to each of these places to show the APPROXIMATE LOCATION of the sites. In 2020 we have expanded the website. The old version can be seen under “Places Visited”
