St. Walburg, Saskatchewan

Valentina Hritzuk from St. Walburg, SK. remembers an interesting post-wedding tradition from the time when she herself got married. On the day following the wedding, there was a party at the home of her husband’s family. Many people were invited for dinner. The dinner was followed by a round of gift-giving which they called a perepiy. Everyone would come up and put in a dollar into a jar as a gift for the young couple. After each person made a contribution, he or she would receive a piece of korovai (wedding bread) and a drink. A group of women sang traditional sad songs during the gift-giving. This was followed by joyful music and dancing.
